Abnormal Iron Incorporation, Survival, Protoporphyrin Content and Fluorescence of One Red Cell Population in Preleukemic Sideroblastic Anemia

چکیده

The dimorphic blood picture in sideroblastic anemia suggests the coexistence of at least two types of erythrocyte, the populations with the smaller RBCs being responsible for the crucial abnormality, namely the impairment of iron incorporation into protoporphyrin. In a patient with sideroblastic anemia who subsequently developed acute myelocytic leukemia, we found a light and a heavy cell population to be morphologically different, the lighter cells showing a smaller MCV and lower MCH, a higher reticulocyte count, fluorocyte count and protoporphyrin content. Radioiron uptake and 51Cr survival were 3.5#{176}/o and 8.2 days for the lighter fraction, 37#{176}/o and 20 days for the heavier fraction. Thus, the impairment of iron incorporation, the high erythrocyte protoporphyrin content, and the reduced survival of red cells in this patient with sideroblastic anemia appeared to be largely confined to the red cell population with the smaller ABCs.

Sideroblastic anemia with markedly increased free erythrocyte protoporphyrin without dermal photosensitivity.

A patient with idiopathic sideroblastic anemia and atypical clinical and biochemical findings is described. He had a greatly increased erythrocyte and plasma protoporphyrin, but normal urine and fecal porphyrins. The erythrocyte protoporphyrin had a fluorescence spectrum typical of free protoporphyrin, but caused no photosensitivity. Bone marrow metal chelatase activity was normal. There were n...

Evaluation of the iron status of a population.

The iron status of a population of 1564 subjects living in the northwestern United States was evaluated by measurements of transferrin saturation, red cell protoporphyrin, and serum ferritin. The frequency distribution of these parameters showed no distinct separation between normal and iron-deficient subjects. When only one of these three parameters was abnormal (transferrin saturation below 1...

The response of free erythrocyte protoporphyrin to pyridoxine therapy in a patient with sideroachrestic (sideroblastic) anemia.

By G. R. LEE, G. E. CARTWRIGHT AND M. M. \VINTROBE F’ EILMEYER has applied the term “sideroachrestic anemia” to conditions characterized by the association of hypochromic anemia with excessive iron storage.’ In referring to the same syndrome, Mollin and others2 prefer the designation “sideroblastic anemia,” a term which emphasizes the importance of abnormal iron accumulation in erythrohlasts. C...

Hereditary sideroblastic anemia and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in a Negro family.

Detailed clinical and genetic studies have been performed in a Negro family, which segregated for sex-linked sideroblastic anemia and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-DP) deficiency. This is the first such pedigree reported. Males affected with sideroblastic anemia had growth retardation, hypochromic microcytic anemia, elevated serum iron, decreased unsaturated iron-binding capacity, incr...
